Description
The autumn moon festival also called mid-autumn moon festival carries similar meanings for Chinese as the Thanksgiving for the west. It is one of the important holidays for Chinese. On that day, families would get together to tastes the Mooncakes as it symbolizes the togetherness of the family.
The traditional Mooncakes usually made with a rich thick filling from lotus seed (or red bean), brown sugar, at the middle is a salted duck egg or eggs yolk. (The double egg yolk ones are more expensive) the design on the crust is made from a wood mould, the Chinese characters of top is the name of the bakery on the right and the type of cake on the left.
There are also the white lotus seed mooncakes and the five nuts mooncakes (made with five different nut, seeds,( walnuts, pumpkin, peanuts, watermelon seeds, and sesames seeds In addition, the mixture sometimes contain candied winter melon and ham) Mooncakes are usually eaten in small wedges accompanied with tea. Today, it is customary for businessmen and families to present them to their clients or relatives as presents before the festival.
